Residency — No visa needed
Italian citizens can move to Spain immediately as EU nationals. To formalise residence:
Getting the TIE (biometric residence card)
1. Obtain NIE number first (Comisaría de Policía, Form EX-15, fee €9.84)
2. Apply for TIE at the Extranjería with:
- Italian passport or national ID card
- Proof of address (rental contract)
- Proof of economic means: employment contract, pension, or bank statements (~€500/month minimum)
- Private health insurance OR proof of access to Spanish public health (e.g., employment with Social Security contributions)
3. Processing time: 4–8 weeks in Málaga
Tip: Italian nationals can use their Italian Carta d'Identità (national ID card) to enter Spain and for initial registration. A passport is not strictly required.
IRNR for Italian non-resident property owners
Italians who buy a second home on Costa del Sol without establishing Spanish tax residence must file the annual Modelo 210 IRNR:
